The main trailer for Greta Gerwig's new “Barbie” movie starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken has arrived.
“Barbie,” according to the trailer, is a fish-out-of-water comedy, as Barbie leaves her world for ours.
Barbie is happy and thriving in her perfectly pink world with Ken and all the other Barbies, until strange things start happening. She's falling off her house instead of gently floating. She's thinking about death for the first time. And, worst of all, she has flat feet.
In the new trailer, released on Thursday, Barbie questions unusual things happening in Barbie Land, such as the shower water always being cold, her inability to float off her roof and her heels being on the ground versus at their usual arch.
With intrusive thoughts like these, Barbie's sense of reality is crumbling and her world, along with it. One shocking change? Her permanently arched feet, a talking point from the last trailer, have gone flat, eliciting screams from the other dolls.
To figure out what’s going on, Barbie goes to the home of a seemingly older version of a Barbie doll with Cyndi Lauper-inspired hair and makeup, who gives her the option of going back to her old life or figuring out the truth about the world.
Warner Bros. is giving audiences a closer look at “Barbie” in a new official trailer. While the story of the film has been mostly kept under wraps, the new trailer teases what Greta Gerwig’s summer tentpole is all about, as Barbie and Ken are set to officially enter the real world on July 21.
Fatigued of their days in Barbieland (where everyone is seemingly also named Barbie and Ken), Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s Ken venture out beyond the borders of their homeland. The new footage shows Barbie and Ken exploring the modern world, which is quite different from the safe haven of their pink-coded, plastic lifestyle. While on Venice Beach, Barbie punches a man who slaps her butt, and she and Ken end up posing with some LAPD mugshots. Meanwhile, people in our world are starting to freak out that a real-life Barbie is walking the streets of L.A.
Barbie's journey of self discovery seems to be posing problems for the owners of the toy company — and potentially the human race. Will Ferrell's character says the repercussions could be "catastrophic," saying, "If this got out, it could mean extremely weird things for our world."
“Barbie in the real world. That’s impossible,” America Ferrera, who plays a human in the film, says.
Also, the trailer features our first listen to Dua Lipa's new song "Dance the Night Away," which will be the first single from Barbie. And it ends with a small snippet of Nick Minaj and Ice Spice's cover of "Barbie World" by Aqua.
I mean, the trailer's tagline is literally: "If you love Barbie. This movie is for you. If you hate Barbie. This movie is for you."
